Mamalila babywearing coat
‘Hooded coat for two’

Mamalila is a German brand with different coats, covers and accessories for babywearing parents who want (or need) to go outside under all weather conditions. If you have a dog for example, you usually can’t decide to stay inside just because it’s raining or snowing. A babywearing coat can be the perfect way to keep your little one dry and warm.
I’ve seen these coats on the Kind & Jugend fair in Cologne and I love their quality and designs. I’ve already reviewed the Mamalila softshell coat, which is great for rainy & windy days.
This wool coat is a casual coat, with a less sporty look. Without the inserts you can wear it to the office and no one will notice it’s a babywearing coat.
I love the berry colour, but there’s also a anthrazite version if you prefer a more neutral colourway. The outer material is 100% (boiled) wool and the lining is a windstopper with a breathable membrane.
This way the coat is a great option for cold, windy & rainy days. The coat will keep you & your baby warm on cold autumn days and I think it would be warm enough for (mild) winter days. (even below zero degrees Celcius, maybe not for -20°C but you can wear an extra layer underneath if needed). Wool is temperature regulating and the breathable inner lining supports this so you won’t be sweating underneath the coat.
There’s a hood for mama, no hood for the baby. The hood is not detachable, that bothered me a little bit because it’s pretty bulky. You can adjust the size of the insert to suit your child, I’ve tried it with both girls and for my toddler I had to open up the zippers of the insert a little bit more to put her head through the hole. The insert provides enough room for a 3,5 year old.
There are loops on the insert, you can attach them to the buttons to create a little head support and to keep your child’s neck sheltered from the chilly wind.
The coat comes with a maternity insert, this way you can already use this coat during pregnancy. As soon as your baby is born you can put the babywearing insert in the front or in the back, just zip it in (very easy!).
You can wear this coat over your wrap or carrier and just close your collar if you’re wearing your child in the front, no need to wear a scarf to keep your neck warm!
To put it on: hold the jacket in front of you, with the inside facing away from you, flip the jacket over your head and let your child’s head slip in the hole. Put your arms through the sleeves, zip up, that’s it!
I’ve made a video on this coat to show the different ways to wear it and how it looks without a baby.
The sleeves are long enough and I love the big pockets!
Your child prefers ‘arms out’? You can open the zippers a little bit more, to give your child more room. I have a wiggly baby and the zippers didn’t move an inch, so no need to be scared that the zipper will open further.
They will stay put!
Sizing: be brave: buy a size smaller! I tried a size M, because I would normally wear a size M or even M/L. I think the size S would be the better choice for me.
On the mamalila website you can find information on sizing, I think that’s pretty accurate. (S = EU size 40)
If you spend a lot of time outside with your child in a wrap or carrier, even on colder or windy days, this jacket is a great investment.
Or maybe you’re just looking for the perfect wool coat for everyday? You can wear this without your child and you would still get compliments on it!
You can buy the coat in the mamalila webshop.
